WOLVES boss Tony Smith has his own personal reasons for wanting to defeat Brisbane Broncos in the World Club Series on Saturday night.

During his playing career, Smith featured in two NRL Grand Finals for St George Illawarra against the Broncos in 1992 and 1993.

Smith’ side lost both games and he says the defeats still haunt him to this day.

“They have been very successful in the last generation or two, they’re a terrific team,” he said.

“They’ve had a whole lot of success over the last few years. I played against them in two losing Grand Finals, they still haunt me!

“Given the chance to come up against them, it would be nice to turn the tables.”

Brisbane are the only Australian team to have taken part in all three runnings of the extended World Club Series.

Wayne Bennett’s side have beaten Wigan on both previous trips to England but now face a Wire side that lost its opening Super League game at Catalans on Saturday.

However, for that very reason, Smith believes the timing of the game is perfect but warned his side they must be more disciplined than they were in Perpignan, where they gave away 13 penalties.

“I think this game has come at the right time for us, it’s a big challenge and we need to play well,” he said.

“They’ve got a good pack of forwards, some terrific half-backs and some world-class outside backs, it’s across the board.

“If we allow them to march us up the park, we’re going to be in for a long night particularly with Milford and Hunt in the halves.

“We’ve got to be disciplined, we can’t be giving away penalties like we have been.”
