WOLVES boss Tony Smith says he “totally disagrees” with the decision to hold an England training camp in January.

National team boss Wayne Bennett will hold a get-together for his England squad in Dubai next month and selected players will be away from their clubs for up to two weeks.

Several Super League coaches, including St Helens’ Keiron Cunningham and Hull FC’s Lee Radford, have expressed their anger at the prospect of losing their players.

Hooker Daryl Clark and half-back Kevin Brown will be the only Wolves players attending and, while he says the club will co-operate as best they can, Smith is the latest coach to express his concern about the plans.

“I totally disagree with the rationale behind it. I don’t understand it whatsoever,” he said.

“I’ve expressed my concerns about it to the national team coach but we’re trying to support it as best we can.

“We’re co-operating by sending two of our players but I totally disagree with it taking place.”

There were five current Wolves players in Bennett’s squad for the Four Nations, with Chris Hill, Stefan Ratchford and Mike Cooper joining Clark and Brown in representing their country during the off-season.

However, Smith confirmed only Clark and Brown would travel to Dubai.

“Mike Cooper has a neck issue that we’re checking on and won’t be attending,” he said.

“Chris Hill won’t be going, neither will Stefan Ratchford as they are both recovering from their respective operations.

“Ben Currie was invited but he is in the same boat as Chris and Stef.”

Bennett himself will only be present for part of the camp as he prepares his Brisbane Broncos team for the 2017 NRL campaign.

Most of the training will be overseen by Paul Anderson and Paul Sculthorpe, both of whom are part of Bennett’s coaching staff.

In addition to the camp, England are set to travel to Australia to face Samoa in a mid-season Test in May as part of their preparations for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
