JOE Westerman says Saturday’s Grand Final beats Wembley in terms of disappointment.

The 12-6 defeat to Wigan Warriors was Wolves’ third Old Trafford defeat in five years, as well as their second major final loss of the year.

Visibly heartbroken, the England international loose forward says the Warriors stuck to their game plan better than his side.

“Wembley was the worst I’ve ever felt after a game but that has topped it. To be in control of a game and let it slip like that is heartbreaking,” he said.

“They rolled us a bit too quick through the middle. They had a game plan to get as many quick play-the-balls as they could and get in our half.

“We stuck to our gameplan pretty well but we didn’t finish the chances we had. It’s another loss that we have to look at now and get right for next year.”

Dec Patton got the game’s first try midway through the first half to give Wolves a 6-2 lead at the break and boost hopes of a first league title in 61 years.

However, Wigan had other ideas and tries from Oliver Gildart and Josh Charnley were enough to secure their 21st English crown as The Wire failed to register a point in the second half.

“As a supporter, it must have been a good game to watch. It was end-to-end stuff, Wigan played well and were down at our end plenty of times but so were we,” Westerman said.

“They scored a couple of great tries in the end.

“The young players are a positive, Dec Patton was outstanding again. He did everything right and played his heart out for us.

“We’ve got the right attitude, everybody put their bodies on the line but once again it wasn’t good enough.”
