WOLVES head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith says his players are “bouncing” ahead of Saturday’s Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford, kick off 6pm.

The Wire will face old rivals Wigan Warriors to decide the fate of European rugby league’s top prize and will look for their first league title since 1955.

Smith says it would be “an honour” to make history and says his players’ attitude this week has been exemplary.

“We’re in pretty good shape, the players came through what was a huge performance last week unscathed and they were pretty fresh over the weekend,” he said.

“They are bouncing at the moment, energy isn’t an issue and nor is attitude. Their attitude has been first class.

“It would give me a lot of satisfaction doing it for the people who have followed this club for a long time and have been with us for so many years.

“We’re a very proud club with a great history. If we can change that history it would be an honour and privilege for us to be a part of that.

“The record is a side issue, it’s really about playing for our badge and playing for each other.

“This one has been elusive for us but there is a real determination about the players at the moment.”

Smith will check on the fitness of scrum-half Chris Sandow, who faces a fitness test after a knee injury has kept him sidelined since the Challenge Cup Final defeat to Hull FC at Wembley.

Wolves will announce their 19-man squad for the game today, Thursday, at 2pm and prop Ryan Bailey is available for selection again after a calf strain.

They face a Wigan side that came from 28-14 down with just 12 men to beat The Wire at The Halliwell Jones Stadium in their last meeting on September 16.

Shaun Wane’s side will be appearing in their fourth consecutive Grand Final.

“People like Gelling, Bateman and Williams give them a bit of spark and throw some caution to the wind. It allows them to get out of their systems,” he said.

“It makes them dangerous, we certainly felt the brunt of it and losing that game hurt us.

“It may have done us a favour though, it’s certainly given us more determination in the last couple of weeks.”
