PHOENIX Fire’s Jamie Aramayo became the first in his category to claim an England Title Series belt at the weekend.

The teenager celebrated a unanimous points decision victory against James Hurcus (Essex University) at York Hall to take the youth under 81kg light heavyweight crown.

“It’s a fantastic achievement,” said head coach Damian Ridpath.

“Jamie boxed well, and was a step ahead of a strong and determined opponent throughout.”

Aramayo, 18, starts a degree in business administration at Liverpool John Moores University this week.

A Phoenix member since the age of eight, he has fought competitively for the past seven years.

Ridpath added: “Hopefully this success is a springboard to bigger and better things.”

Sam Watson, another Phoenix fighter, won an eliminator – again after a unanimous points decision – against Callum Smith (Trowbridge) in the youth 56kg bantamweight class.

Courtney Chadwick, who has moved up to the 64kg light welterweight category, was a points-decision winner against Abdul Amid (Heart of Portsmouth).

His accuracy throughout against an aggressive opponent made the difference in another eliminator.

Meanwhile in a youth 52kg flyweight bout, Imad Nasseb lost a points decision to Bailey Fowler, a seasoned campaigner also from Heart of Portsmouth.

“It was a first outing of the season and we’re delighted with our boxers,” added Ridpath.
