WARRINGTON Wolves can look forward to additional 'derby' fixtures next season, which will provide an opportunity to check out a new statue of one of their former players.

Leigh Centurions' promotion to Super League, for the first time since 2005, will add to the local rivalry Wolves fans already enjoy with Widnes Vikings, Wigan Warriors and St Helens.

When Wolves head over to Leigh Sports Village for a fixture in 2017 fans will be able to check out a 30ft bronze statue of John Woods, the former Great Britain stand off who rounded off a stellar career with two seasons at The Wire.

The £30,000 statue will be unveiled at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday ahead of the Centurions' home clash with Batley Bulldogs.

It will take pride of place outside the stadium's reception.

Woods, who also had a spell at Bradford Northern after leaving Leigh, scored 613 points in 72 games for Warrington between 1987 and 1989.

He kicked 254 goals and five drop goals to add to his 25 tries in primrose and blue.

But it was at hometown club Leigh that he established himself among the game's elite, setting a club record for points scoring.

Woody racked up 2,492 points for Leigh in 349 appearances after making his debut for the club in 1976.

He captained the team to the League Championship in 1982.
