WARRINGTON Wolves coach Lee Briers says he will not feel ‘quite as nervous’ as he prepares to experience a Wembley final from the other side of the touchline.

The Wire legend, who made 409 appearances for the club before retiring at the end of the 2013 season, was an influential figure in all of the club’s recent Challenge Cup Final wins in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Since retiring Briers has been head coach of the club’s under 19s side but has had increased involvement with the first team and says he is looking forward to gaining more ‘invaluable’ experience at Wembley.

“It’s going to be very different for me, I don’t think I’ll feel quite as nervous this time,” he joked.

“I’m really looking forward to it, to have this opportunity so early in my coaching career is going to be fantastic.

“I’m absolutely loving coaching so far, the experience I have gained from Tony Smith (head coach) and Richard Agar (first team coach) has been invaluable.

“Obviously my main role is with the under 19s but to be involved more with the first team and being around Tony and Rich as they do their work is great for me.

“The experience I’m getting will help me reach my goals.”

Briers was instrumental in Wolves’ recent period of success at the national stadium, winning the Lance Todd Trophy in the 2010 final win over Leeds Rhinos.

A year earlier he kicked the winning drop goal in the quarter-final tie at Hull KR to set Wolves on the path to Wembley.

However this year he said his role will be a very different one.

“When you are playing in games like this you can just focus on yourself and getting your own head right,” he said.

“Now I’m pretty much at the beck and call of the players for whatever they need.

“That could involve any extra training, helping Jon Clarke (fellow former Wolves Wembley hero) out with strength and conditioning – whatever they need from me I’m there.

“Of course the main instructions and advice will come from Tony but if anyone wants to pick my brains about playing at Wembley I’ll help them out.

“It’s a special day but only if you win. You don’t go to Wembley just to take part.”
