WOLVES utility man Stefan Ratchford says he is enjoying his stint at full-back but says he will have to work hard to nail the spot down.

The England international’s versatility has been a key asset for Wolves this season and he has appeared in a number of different positions, including hooker, second row and stand-off.

However, he was appeared at full-back in the last four games and says it is a position he would like to spend more time in.

“I enjoy playing full back as there’s more running space and more influence on both sides of play so I’m enjoying it,” he said.

“I know we’ve got a lot of competition back there with people like Matty Russell, Gene Ormsby, Tom Lineham and Kevin Penny.

“Everyone wants to nail down any spot they can, I do enjoy playing full back and it’s a role I’ve always enjoyed playing and either there or stand-off are two positions I’d say I want to play longer term.

“I’ve played there the last four games and I think if I can pick my performances up a bit more I’ll hopefully get a good run and nail that position down for a while.”

With wingers Lineham and Ormsby still absent from the squad, Ratchford looks set to continue in his new position in tomorrow’s Challenge Cup quarter final against Widnes Vikings, with Russell and Penny on the wings.

The game arrives off the back of last weekend’s 20-18 win over Catalans, a performance the Wolves camp were unhappy with despite the result.

However, Ratchford says the players have responded well in training and is confident of a better showing on Friday.

“We’ve had quite a few lads carrying little niggles and we’ve not had as much time on the training field in the past few weeks,” he said.

“We had a chat between ourselves and we said we can either keep feeling sorry for ourselves and missing field sessions or we can rip in and get back to the standards we set.

“It’s led to a really intense week this week, we’ve probably done more in the last two or three days than we have in the last two weeks.

“If you saw the dressing room after the game, you wouldn’t have thought we’d just beaten Catalans because everyone was quite low and quiet.

“We were disappointed with the way we performed, we’re grateful for the two points but we want to do more than that. We want to be performing well each week.”

The Challenge Cup provides a distraction from the Super League and it is a competition the former Salford man is fond of.

In his first season with Wolves, Ratchford was part of the side that beat Leeds Rhinos in the 2012 final at Wembley.

After losing out in the semi-finals in each of the last three seasons, the utility man is keen to return to the national stadium.

“It’s absolutely massive, it’s been said before but it’s the Challenge Cup and it’s do or die,” he said.

“We can’t say ‘we can fix up next week’ in this competition, it’s win at all costs on Friday and it’s a competition we’re desperate to do well in.

“Being out there at Wembley and lifting the trophy is something that will live with me for the rest of my life, there’s no better feeling.

“I’m not happy that I’ve only won it once, I want to win it three, four or five times.

“Walking out at Wembley is so special and its certainly something I want to experience again.”
