WOLVES first team coach Richard Agar has praised the work of Chris Chester since he took control at Sunday’s opponents Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The former Hull KR coach has won five of his six Super League games in charge of the West Yorkshire club since succeeding Brian Smith in March.

They currently sit seventh in the Super League table and Agar, who himself had a two-year spell as head coach at Belle Vue between 2012 and 2014, is impressed by the work Chester has done at his former club.

“They’ve got some players in very good form,” he said.

“Everyone talks about the win they had against Wigan and, while I’m sure there were certain circumstances behind the Wigan performance, that’s not detracting from the performance Wakefield put in.

“Since Chris Chester has come in, they’ve got a little bit more attacking structure and they’ve certainly worked out what works for them and what their strong points are within the team.”

Wolves go into the game on the back of a 70-10 Challenge Cup victory over Championship side Oldham, which secured a quarter-final tie at home to local rivals Widnes next month.

They made a poor start which saw them go 6-0 behind early on, but Agar says the final result was testament to the way the team adjusted.

“In all honesty for the first 25 minutes we knew Oldham would be highly spirited which they were, they came out with a lot of enthusiasm to try and rattle us and they did on a couple of occasions,” he said.

“We were disappointed to concede the soft try like we did, and we felt offensively we played into their hands a bit.

“We got some messages out there, adapted a little bit and got back to what we were planning to do in the first place, I thought the ball movement and some of the quality of the tries we scored was top class.

“Yes, we were playing a team from a lower division but we scored some sensational tries.”
