SKIPPER Joel Monaghan is set to leave Warrington Wolves at the end of the season, along with Gareth O’Brien.

Both players have been released from the final year of their contracts at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Six players in total will leave the playing staff at the end of the season, with Monaghan and O’Brien joined by Simon Grix, Roy Asotasi, Chris Bridge and Richie Myler.

“I’d like to thank Joel for the service he has given over the last few years and we also appreciate his professionalism and attitude along the way,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith.

Monaghan is the second-fastest player to reach 100 tries for the club, behind Brian Bevan, with his record currently standing at 141 in 143 appearances – helping Wolves to a League Leaders' Shield in 2011 and Challenge Cup win in 2012.

"His try scoring accomplishments have helped the club achieve great things," added Smith.

"He’s been a big character within the team and within the club, and has been an absolute pleasure to work with.

"He will remain a very popular personality who has shared in some great history-making for the club.”

Former Rylands junior O’Brien is a product of the club’s academy system, having made his first-team debut in 2011 and going on to make 62 appearances, score 19 tries and 78 goals.

Warrington Guardian:

“Gaz has given tremendous service to the club for a number of years and hopefully will again in the future but it was thought in his best interest that he goes and establishes himself, and gains first-hand experience at another club at this stage,” said Smith.

“He has certainly been a pleasure to work with and a truly dedicated Warrington player, and hopefully, with further development in his career, he can re-join the club a much better and matured player.”

Former New Zealand and Samoa international, who signed from South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2014, Asotasi is out of contract and will return to Australia.

“We’d like to thank Roy for his services and wish him well for his future as he heads back to Australia,” said Smith.

“We are grateful for his efforts and experience, and the contributions he has made to the squad both and on and off the field.”

Grix is set to become part of Wolves’ performance team, while Bridge and Myler leave for Widnes Vikings and Catalans Dragons respectively.

Smith added: “While I have expressed our gratitude for each individual, collectively I’d like to thank each of the players for their commitment to the club and wish them well. We will always welcome them back in the future.”
