JACK Hughes’ continuing 2015 campaign is a contradiction to the one experienced by Warrington Wolves.

Studious observers in the Huddersfield Giants camp say the 23-year-old has been a model of consistency during his season-long loan from hometown club Wigan Warriors.

He has been an ever-present in Paul Anderson’s pack and that takes some doing at a club that have built a reputation for powerful and ruthless forward play.

It is what Hughes wanted, what he needed and it is Wolves who will see the benefits in 2016 after his two-year deal was confirmed yesterday, Wednesday, following weeks of speculation.

Ambitious Hughes, finding himself behind England pair Liam Farrell and Joel Tomkins in the Wigan back-row pecking order, wanted more regular game time to show his true colours.

With John Bateman also challenging for back-row spots at the DW Stadium, Hughes, who made his senior debut in 2011, was all too often asked to do a job in the centres but he sees his future as a pack man and has proved his quality this season.

Even last week, when Hughes featured for his loan club against Wigan, his first-half performance in particular made him one of the game’s stand-outs and he showed his strength in scoring a try in the second period too.

With the ability to still help out the team at centre if required, in a similar way that Ben Currie has done for Warrington this year, it is a tick in the box for a trademark Smith signing.

Physical maturity has helped him, his frame filling out over the past two seasons in particular so that he can live with the rigours of Super League pack life on a consistent basis.

Coming through the Wigan ranks, gaining England Academy honours and an England Knights squad place as well as already having 99 top-flight appearances under his belt, it is an experienced young talent heading to The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The former Golborne High School student, a junior at Golborne Parkside and Wigan St Jude’s, has big-game experience too, coming off the bench for Wigan in their Grand Final win over Warrington at Old Trafford in 2013.

Smith said: “He’s a terrific young British player and I have a lot of time for Jack.

“He has had a very, very good year. He’s been very strong for Huddersfield.

“Jack’s a big, strapping lad who has a strong desire to play for our club and I think he’s got a really healthy future.

“He is a potential England representative in the near future and we are hoping to help him on that route to achieve this.

“I think he’s going to play a really big role in our future and will give us a lot of depth in our back row as well as his versatility to play in the backs.

“He’s a really exciting young player.”

Being prepared to leave his hometown club for a loan year across the Pennines shows the belief Hughes has in his abilities and the attitude to make things happen for himself.

Hughes said upon signing this week: “I am proud to be joining this great club.

“I look forward to giving my best in the seasons to come, working with Tony Smith and joining up with the squad in the off-season.”
