TONY Smith was furious at Castleford boss Daryl Powell’s criticism of Ben Westwood on Sunday and hopes that outburst will be considered at a tribunal tonight.

The forward has been charged with making a Grade B shoulder strike on Luke Gale in the fourth minute on Sunday and faces a potential ban of one to two games.

Westwood was charged after the incident was viewed by the RFL Match Review Panel and will appear before an independent disciplinary tribunal tonight, Tuesday.

“We’re hoping people see that he’s had a fair job done on him in terms of publicity,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby.

“The outburst after the game hasn’t helped him at all. I think it’s unjustified and the wrong way to do it.”

Powell told reporters after Sunday’s game: “How we can have five officials and none of them saw that is very poor.

“There wasn’t even a penalty given, play just continued. He didn’t even get 10 minutes. It was a terrible challenge.

“Luke is in hospital. I don’t know how bad he is but it was very poor from everyone concerned.

“I presume something will be done about it this week but it’s a bit late for Luke. It was a clear strike to the head and it was a bad tackle.”

But Smith believes it is a case of those shouting loudest when it comes to getting incidents reviewed.

“There’s a shoulder charge by Jake Webster on Gareth O’Brien in the same match later on and nothing said about it by the review panel,” he added.

“At the moment it seems like if you scream about things and make a fuss about them that’s the way you get action.

“If you don’t say anything and you hope that people do their jobs properly, that doesn’t always work out the right way.

“We’ve got to cop it at the moment.”
