WARRINGTON Wolves face losing full back Matty Russell for all of their Super 8s fixtures.

Russell is likely to be sidelined for at least two months with an ankle injury sustained at Castleford Tigers on Sunday.

The club’s head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith says Wolves are weighing up two treatment options for Scotland international Russell.

The 22-year-old returned earlier this month following a two-month absence with the same injury on his other ankle.

“Not good,” said Smith about Russell’s condition.

“It’s the same sort of injury that he had last time, syndemosis of the other ankle.

“There are two options; one is to rehab for about six weeks and hope that he’s back after that time. If that fails he’d have to have it operated on and you know that you’ve lost him.

“Or you have the operation now and maybe get him back in eight or nine weeks.

“We haven’t made a final decision, but we’ll probably go with the second option.”

And Russell has Tweeted:

Stefan Ratchford moved to full back after Russell’s injury on Sunday, with Ben Currie switching to centre.

Smith says Ratchford will occupy that spot again against Hull KR on Saturday, while returning Gary Wheeler or Rhys Evans will move into the centres.

“Stef will slot back to full back and we’ve got the option of either Gary Wheeler of Rhys Evans in the centres, so we’ll weigh that up during the week and see how they go there.”
