Wigan Warriors under 19s 72 Warrington Wolves under 19s 6

LEE Briers insists his Warrington Wolves under 19s side will dust themselves down after a heavy defeat at Wigan and get set for Saturday’s clash with Leeds.

Reece Brunt crossed in the second half for Wolves’ only try, but Warrington could not stop the hosts crossing 13 times.

But Briers will have his side prepared for Saturday’s fixture at Stanningley ARLFC, kick off 12pm.

“We will dust ourselves down in training this week and make sure that we are ready for our trip to Leeds Rhinos,” he said.

“That was a poor display from us and Wigan took advantage by capitalising on most of our errors. The Warriors went in front very early on and never looked back.

“Second row James Jones can be very proud of the way he performed; he never took a backward step and got through an enormous amount of work in attack and defence.”

Warriors opened the scoring in the third minute when a high kick to the corner by scrum half Lewis Heckford was collected superbly by winger Jack Higginson and he scored on the right.

Shorrocks converted and four minutes later the ball was swept along the line which created space for centre Liam Forsyth who broke clear and scored on the right. Shorrocks added the conversion.

Wigan moved further ahead when Heckford put second row Macauley Davies through a huge gap and he raced away before passing back inside to Heckford who went over at the side of the posts.

Shorrocks converted and just before the half hour a penalty on the Wolves 20 metre line for Wigan saw the ball passed to second row Nick Gregson, who broke through some weak Warrington tackling to score under the posts. Shorrocks added the simple conversion.

Shortly afterwards Warriors prop forward Kieron Sherratt combined with centre Oliver Gildart to create room for Gregson to exploit and he went over at the side of the posts and that was soon followed by a try for Higginson who picked up a grubber kick from Heckford to score wide out on the right.

Right on the stroke of half time Davies made a great break down the middle that split Wolves’ defence and he found Forsyth who raced 40 metres to score on the right. Shorrocks goaled to make the half time score 40-0.

Six minutes into the second half Forsyth went over in the right corner from close range to complete his hat trick; Shorrocks converted from the touchline and then a 50 metre break down the middle from Davies split the Wolves defence and he sent Gildart away to score wide out on the left to bring up the half century.

The 10th Wigan try came when Shorrocks put loose forward Kyle Shelford through a gap to score on the right.

Wolves finally managed to get on the scoreboard when hooker Reece Brunt burrowed over from dummy half to score at the side of the posts after loose forward Sam Wilde had been held just short. Second row Harvey Livett added the conversion.

The Warriors were soon back on the attack and a kick downfield from winger Liam Marshall was fumbled by the Wolves and Gregson profited to score his hat trick at the side of the posts.

Shorrocks converted and then Wigan ran the ball down the right on the last tackle and Forsyth broke away before finding full back Gabriel Fell on his inside to score on the right. Shorrocks added the conversion.

Eight minutes from time a kick on the last tackle by Heckford was charged down by the Wolves and Gildart picked up the loose ball and found substitute Jake Moore who raced 40 metres to score under the posts. Shorrocks converted to complete a comprehensive win for the home side.
