TONY Smith says there is no place in the game for the 'bad vibe' witnessed during Warrington Wolves’ loss to Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Referee Phil Bentham issued four yellow cards, with Anthony England, Daryl Clark, Jake Connor and Danny Brough all sin-binned, while Eorl Crabtree and Chris Bridge also clashed.

Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby also says he fell victim to some abuse in the stand, and insists that is not what people want to see at rugby league matches.

“It didn’t seem like a nice spirit there between the two teams,” said Smith.

“I don’t know why, I’ve never seen it. I think there’s a lot of angst placed at referees but I couldn’t see him doing anything much different to what he did there today.

“Somehow it boiled over onto the pitch. There was a bad vibe – I had some abuse up in the stand as well.

“That’s not nice, it’s not what sport is about and it’s not what our game is about either.

“It’s a physical game and sometimes things boil over, but to see some of those scenes there from both teams, it didn’t look good.

“Both teams lost their composure at different stages and it’s not what we should be encouraging or what we should be coming to see – we’ll have to have a look at it.”

Wolves lost Ben Currie in the first half and Gareth O’Brien in the second, both to head knocks.

“We’re down on troops at the moment, like they are too, there’s a bit of attrition there. I think we had nine out and then lost Currie after the first try,” added Smith.

“Then we lost our half back half way through the second half. So we were down on rotation, but that’s no excuse.

“Gaz is’s ok, I think he’ll be fine. He’s got his senses there but when we looked at Gaz we erred on the side of safety.

“Ben was pretty good in the first half but then he had a bit of a headache, so we erred on the side of safety and he’s fine now.”

Smith says Wolves’ mounting injury list should be no excuse for the defeat.

“That’s what the game is about, being able to handle that and I thought they handled it slightly better than us,” he explained.

“I was really proud of our defence. We didn’t let in any soft tries, a couple of mistakes around kicks and that’s what you tend to get in those conditions – ricochets, bounces off shins and somebody picks it up.

“We had one or two of those and they got two or three of them.

“Their kicking game was slightly better than ours. That first half we were pleased with our kicking game, particularly after having to soak up a penalty from the kick off when you’re defending on your own line.

“Defensively we were pretty sound there for the most part.”
