CHRIS Bridge was a last-minute replacement for Gary Wheeler after Warrington Wolves’ new boy picked up a calf tear.
Wheeler, who is a doubt to face old club St Helens on Thursday, has a grade one tear in his calf.
“It was last minute,” said Smith. “He did it in the team run and he’s strained his calf.
“We sent him for a scan yesterday. We expected him to play, then we got the result and he’s got a grade one tear in his calf.
“Bridgey got the call up. Bridgey did train with us yesterday and for late notice I thought he played particularly well.
“He hasn’t had a lot of game time so far this year but I thought he slotted in really well.”
