TONY Smith is monitoring the fitness of Ben Harrison and Chris Bridge ahead of selection for the Super League clash with Leeds Rhinos on Friday.

The pair were named in Smith’s provisional 19-man squad for the win over Hull KR last week, but did not feature.

Having both endured pre-season operations, Smith says they still have fitness work to do.

“We’ll monitor them, they’re doing some extra training,” explained Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby.

“Each have had a couple of games for us when needed, but both had pre-season operations.

“They just haven’t had a chance to really do the same amount of work as some of the other boys, we’re just really trying to catch them up a bit. Get them to the fitness levels they can perform their best at.

“Sometimes when you’re playing, you can’t get as much fitness into them as they need. At the moment we’ll monitor it and see how we’re shaping up.

“As to whether they’re involved this week, we’ll decide that in the next day.”

Ryan Atkins, who missed out on Sunday’s win with a bout of flu, was in training yesterday despite it being a players’ day off.

“He came in although it’s players’ day off,” added Smith. “He came in to do some work and just have a bit of a blow out.

“He’s on the mend at this stage, he was just in that bad shape he wouldn’t have had any energy at the weekend – he did the right thing by the team.”
