Widnes Vikings under 19s 32 Warrington Wolves under 19s 12

WARRINGTON Wolves suffered a disappointing defeat to local rivals Widnes Vikings in the Under 19s Academy at the Select Security Stadium on Friday evening.

Wolves started the stronger and took the lead after five minutes when scrum half Brad Stanway was held just short of the line and from the play the ball hooker Danny Hirst found prop forward Robert Holroyd, who barged over at the side of the posts.

Stand off Morgan Smith converted but then a mistake almost immediately by Wolves gave Vikings a scrum 20 metres out.

The ball was sent out to centre Ryan Ince, who brushed off several defenders to race over in the left corner. Fellow centre Ed Chamberlain landed a fine touchline conversion.

Vikings took the lead for the first time midway through the half when a bullet pass from scrum half Konnagh Hill found Chamberlain, who powered through a gap to score at the side of the posts.

He converted himself.

Five minutes later the young Wolves hit back when Hirst found Smith close to the line and he shot through a gap to score at the right of the posts.

Smith’s conversion levelled the scores once again at 12-12, which is the way it stayed up to half time.

Widnes went back in front within the first minute of the second half when substitute Jay Chapelhow raced down the middle and split Wolves’ defence before outpacing the chasing pack on a 70 metre dash to score at the right of the posts.

Chamberlain converted before good work down the left wing by stand off Connor Davies saw him keep the ball alive before finding winger Olly Ashall who squeezed over in the left corner. Chamberlain added on the extras once again from far out.

Vikings made the game safe shortly after the hour mark when prop forward Ted Chapelhow broke through the Wolves line and went over between the posts from close range.

Chamberlain converted and then added a penalty goal seven minutes from time to give his side a 32-12 win.
