TONY Smith has been delighted with Kevin Penny's performances in this season's two Warrington Wolves Super League games so far.

Smith on Penny after win at Hull FC:

"I thought he was absolutely outstanding, I thought he was probably the best player on the park.

"He was very well acknowledged by his teammates.

"He’s growing Kev, growing in confidence, growing in stature and growing in what he feels he can contribute to the team.

"He’ still relatively new to our team, he played a few games last year, but he hasn’t had a chance to settle if you like.

"I think he’s still finding his feet, but he’s doing it in a really positive way. He was tested out by a very good winger, Tom Lineham, but he showed he can more than handle it in a big way."

Smith on Penny after home win against Salford Red Devils:

"I thought he was coming along last year and had he have not got injured last year I think he would have played a lot more Super League games.

"He came back to us much more prepared and the last few months have probably helped him as well.

"The more time he gets to train and play rugby league he's going to get better and better but he's got that attribute all of us who play sport would love and that's speed - and he's got that in tons.

"I thought he was terrific today. He's not just a speedster who can score a try anymore, he gets in and does the tough stuff.

"You have a look at how many men it takes to tackle him each time he carries the ball. He's very strong. He's not the biggest built bloke in the world but he's strong - and that's power. And he takes some tackling.

"He doesn't tackle himself anymore. Once upon a time he used to look at a defensive line and get tackled. Now if you don't tackle him he'll go through you. He's come a long way but his reading of the game is the other big asset."
