IMPRESSIVE performances in England Academy’s 28-14 win over Australian Schoolboys could see a trio of Warrington Wolves teenagers appearing for the Super League side during pre-season.

Wolves’ head of youth, junior development and recruitment Ben Lazenby was pleased with what he saw from Toby King, Jack Johnson and Sam Wilde on Friday at Leigh Sports Village.

Johnson scored the decisive try, assisted by teammate King, and Lazenby believes the youngsters are now keen to press on in their club careers.

“It’s great for the club to be represented with three players in the squad,” he said.

“They’re looking now to make the next step at Warrington. With any luck we may well see one or two in the pre-season friendlies.”

Johnson and Wilde had sat out the first test 18-22 defeat last week, while King’s man-of-the-match performance in that loss saw him tightly marked this time around.

But Johnson scored the decisive try when, from King’s pass, he found possession in the corner before skipping back inside and selling three green and gold shirts to dart over.

Victory levelled the two-test series and gave England Academy, coached by former Wolves man Richard Marshall, a first win over an old foe since 2010.

“They were absolutely made up to be involved and that showed in their performances,” added Lazenby.

“All three did well. Sam Wilde was outstanding in the middle unit and gave the team some valuable go forward.

“Toby King was marked quite tightly based on the first match so he was a bit restricted with what he could get away with, but he put Jack Johnson away.

“Jack still had a bit to do and it wasn’t straight forward. He’s a great finisher, he threw three defenders with one sidestep.

“Sam and Jack had not been picked for the first game but knew they had a big part to play. I think their professionalism showed through during the week leading up to the game.”
