TONY Smith admits is he concerned about Matty Russell after the full back was stretchered off against Widnes Vikings and taken straight to hospital.

Russell felt the full force of a tackle from Macgraff Leuluai after fumbling a high ball and was left unconscious for a long period of time.

Smith said the full back is ‘pretty smashed up’, but Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby concedes he had no interest in watching a replay of the incident.

“He’s on his way to hospital, they put him straight in the ambulance. He’s pretty smashed up,” said Smith.

“He’s going to minimum lose some teeth, his nose is smashed, he was unconscious for a long time and we’re concerned.

“I don’t watch video replays anymore, I just switch off. It’s of no use to me, I don’t have any say over that.

“Strange that they end up putting it on report. Strange. It took some time for that to happen, somebody change their mind along the track there.

“If he needs to be dealt with they’ll do that during the week. The only crucial thing about it being put on report is that if they think it could be illegal we get a free substitution.

“I think Alex Walmsley will be interested in watching what happens there and see if it’s a similar incident or not. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not – that’s up to other people.”
