WORK to start demolishing Wilderspool Stadium could start next week - although it is unlikely to be completed until the autumn.

The final game at the famous former home of Warrington Wolves took place in May - a decade after the Super League club moved out to its new home The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Now developers Langtree, who are regenerating the area with the council under the name Wire Regeneration, have told the council they intend to start pulling the stadium down.

The legal notice was published this week and says work can be carried out from Monday and must be finished by November.

The bulk of the work is likely to start at the end of August though.

A spokesman for Wire Regeneration said: “We have always made our intentions for the Wilderspool Stadium clear and this notice is part of the process we need to follow to ensure the works are correctly procured.

"We are working toward appointing a demolition contractor in the coming weeks and we’ll inform local residents and the broader Warrington community of demolition timescales in advance of works commencing.”

There is still no confirmation of what the land will be used for long term.
