WARRINGTON Wolves joint-captain Ben Westwood was ‘inspirational’ against Wigan Warriors on Thursday night, according to his boss Tony Smith.

Westwood was on the losing side, but put in a hard-fought performance in an attempt to drag his side over the line and overturn Wigan’s early advantage.

“What a man,” said Smith. “He’s a machine and just keeps going. You could just see the effort and see what he was trying to do for our team. He was trying to pick them up and drive along with him.

“He’s remarkable, I thought his effort was inspirational to watch and he certainly doesn’t ever die wondering about what he can do to get his team across the line.

“He’ll get in there and put his body on the line and if he needs to do that three or four times in a set he’ll do it.

“It’s an incredible performance for a guy who wasn’t on the winning team, as good as I’ve seen for a while.

“He’s been playing in that middle unit for a while now. He plays good wherever he’s asked to play.”
