Saltonstall - the only smiling Englishman on Saturday!
JAMES Saltonstall had a grin from ear to ear after winning with Italy against England in Saturday’s World Cup warm-up game in Salford.
He was probably the only Englishman who did!
The 20-year-old rising Warrington Wolves talent, who signed a four-year contract last November, played his part on the left wing in the Azurri’s historic win.
Italy, 10 places behind England in the European rankings, only came together three days before the game and had only trained twice.
“It’s great to get a win against England,” said the beaming Saltonstall but did not feel the victory was a surprise.
“We’ve got a good squad,” said the utility back, who represented England Academy on their tour of Australia last year.
“After coming together on Wednesday we just wanted to sort out our defence and then build on our attack during the rest of the World Cup.
“We’ve got NRL experienced Grand Finalists in the Italy squad and we knew we would be there or thereabouts.
“It was just good to get a first game under our belts.
“But it’s one game at a time. Hopefully we can build during the week ahead of our game against Wales on Saturday and hopefully we can put in another good performance and get the result.”
Saltonstall, a member of Wolves’ Grand Final-winning under 20s team from 2012, qualifies for representing Italy through his grandmother, who was born in the country.
