Hill: It's a massive wake-up call
CHRIS Hill said England’s loss to minnows Italy at Salford on Saturday was a ‘massive wake-up call’.
The Warrington Wolves prop teamed up with South Sydney Rabbitohs’ Tom Burgess off the bench, but soon after Italy went 12-4 in front, the heavens opened and it was a mighty struggle from there.
A drop goal from Newcastle Knights winger Josh Mantellato two minutes before time settled the first ever international between the two nations, with the Italians ranked 10 places behind England in Europe.
Hill said: “With the way we’d prepared on camp in South Africa I think it’s very disappointing.
“I think it’s a massive wake-up call, not a big one, but a massive one. We’ve got to learn from it.
“I don’t know whether we just thought we’d turn up and roll Italy over but they’ve come with a strong squad and we just weren’t at the races.
“We didn’t start well, I don’t think we ever got into the game, we didn’t get any play together, our defence was poor and we’ve got a lot to work on this week.”
England open their World Cup campaign against favourites Australia at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
