Warrington Wolves' lack of recognition proves team effort, say Micky Higham
MICKY Higham is ready to ‘stick it’ to those who did not predict Wolves would be champions in 2013 – despite bookmakers making them pre-season favourites.
Although his own efforts have been heralded with internal awards, he feels teammates have not received the recognition they deserve.
And he believes for that there is a reason, one that is the make-up of champions.
“Probably by the recognition we’ve not got this year, it shows it has been a real team effort,” said the 33-year-old hooker, a Grand Final winner with St Helens against Bradford in 2002.
“It’s been stated about us not having anyone in the Dream Team and nobody up for Man of Steel.
“That’s probably because as a group of players we all chip in and there’s been no real stand-out players – a real team effort.
“And as long as we’re happy in-house, that we get the accolades off Tony and the staff and the people around us, that’s all that matters to us.
“Probably a lot of talk this year has been about other teams. We’ve just got on with our business and steadied our way into second place.
“We’ve ended one or two points away from best attacking and best defending team, so we knew we weren’t far off the mark.
“And this time of year, we’re getting pretty good at knockout rugby so hopefully we can take it one step further.
“Hopefully we can finish it off now and stick it to people who didn’t probably fancy us.”
Higham collected the Wolves supporters’ player-of-the-year award after Thursday’s win, adding to the one he had already received off the club.
They are the first such prizes he has achieved since starting out his career in the lower league with Leigh Centurions.
“It’s really special and it must be as you get a bit older you must get a bit wiser,” he said.
“But it’s a team sport and the team comes first. It will all be worth it if we lift the big one on Saturday.”
