Mike Cooper desperate to be part of Warrington Wolves history
WARRINGTON-born forward Mike Cooper is desperate to become a part of Wolves’ first Super League winning side before he jets off to Australia.
The homegrown talent has ‘been proud’ to pull on the primrose and blue of Warrington since starting his club career at the age of 11, and his love for the club means that the idea of missing out on Wolves’ first Super League title would be too much to bear.
“It would mean everything to me to be a part of the first Warrington side to win it,” said Cooper, who was on the bench in last year’s Grand Final loss to Leeds Rhinos.
“But not just for me, for all the lads here.
“I have loved every minute of being at the club.
“I am a Wolves fan and am Warrington born and bred, so the fact I have been able to tick the box of playing for my hometown club is something that I am very grateful for.
“But it can’t be the same feeling as last year, it just can’t, we are ready for it this time.”
Cooper is firmly of the opinion that the Grand Final is unlike any other game throughout the rest of the Super League season, including the Challenge Cup Final, of which he has had plenty of experience in the past few years.
The intensity of the crowd, the atmosphere of Old Trafford and the fact that it is played beneath the floodlights all add up to make the Super League showpiece more intense than any game that precedes it, and the 25-year-old is convinced last year’s defeat will help Wolves this time around.
“It is great to be going to back to Old Trafford,” said Cooper, who starts a two-year contract with NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons next year.
“To get back there and give ourselves another chance to win it is what we have been working so hard for since pre-season.
“I think we learnt a lot from last year’s experience.
“The Grand Final is different from any other game in the regular season, it certainly goes up a few paces, so hopefully we’ll be ready for that this time.”
