OPPOSITION CORNER: Giants arrive looking to end Wolves hoo-doo
RECORDS are made to be broken.
Or at least, that is what Paul Anderson and his Giants side will be hoping when they arrive at The Halliwell Jones Stadium tonight, Thursday.
There were few raised eyebrows when Wolves announced their ClubCall pick on Sunday, despite Huddersfield having been the most consistent team on their way to lifting the League Leaders’ Shield.
And that is because they beat every team in the league this year except one, Wolves, against whom Giants have not won since 2011.
Wolves have been victorious in eight straight meetings between the two sides, scoring 300 points while conceding just 88.
But Smith was at pains to point out that past performances mean little in a knockout play-off game.
Indeed, it was Giants that ended Wolves’ play-off hopes in 2010 having failed to beat them all year, and the mental image of Nathan Brown chasing Leroy Cudjoe up the touchline for the match-clinching try will still sit uncomfortably in Wolves’ collective memory.
The form of Man of Steel favourite Danny Brough and his halves partner Luke Robinson will play a huge role in Giants’ success or failure, and Wolves will have to shut down the kicking game of the former if they are to make it nine from nine.
Grand Final-winning hooker Shaun Lunt will also be crucial to Huddersfield’s performance and Wolves’ first job will be to ensure that the former Leeds man is not allowed to get on the front foot off the back of dangerous packmen.
Wolves 19: Ryan Atkins, Chris Bridge, Lee Briers, Garreth Carvell, Mike Cooper, Simon Grix, Ben Harrison, Micky Higham, Chris Hill, Brett Hodgson, Joel Monaghan, Michael Monaghan, Adrian Morley, Richie Myler, Stefan Ratchford, Chris Riley, Trent Waterhouse, Ben Westwood, Paul Wood.
Huddersfield 19: Scott Grix, Leroy Cudjoe, Joe Wardle, Jermaine McGillvary, Danny Brough, Luke Robinson, Eorl Crabtree, Shaun Lunt, Craig Kopczak, Brett Ferres, David Faiumu, Michael Lawrence, Larne Patrick, Jason Chan, Ukuma Ta’ai, Aaron Murphy, Dale Ferguson, Ben Blackmore, Kyle Woo
