Warrington Wolves chose to face Huddersfield Giants in play-off semi final
WARRINGTON Wolves have chosen to play Huddersfield Giants in the Super League Play-off semi finals at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday, September 26, kick off 8pm.
Wolves’ Chairman Steven Broomhead made the announcement at the ClubCall event moments ago, Sunday, having discussed the choice with the club's board.
Wolves were left with the option of taking on defending champions Leeds Rhinos or League Leaders’ Shield winners Huddersfield Giants, who won their respective preliminary semi finals against St Helens and Hull FC this week.
It is the first time since the eight-team play-off was introduced to Super League in 2009 that the league table's top four sides will face off in the semi finals, while Wolves have become the first team to choose to take on the league leaders having beaten Huddersfield Giants on three separate occasions this year.
But their recent head-to-head record was not the only reason that Wolves chose Paul Anderson's men, who hammered Hull FC 76-18 at the John Smiths Stadium on Thursday night.
Broomhead said: “It was a board decision.
"We made the choice in principal following the game between Huddersfield and Hull because it would be highly likely that we would choose the winner of that game.
"That is because we would have some extra preparation time for the game.
"If the game against Leeds and Saints had unfortunately produced a lot of injuries then that would perhaps have changed our minds.
"Obviously the record between the two sides had an influence because there is a confidence there despite the result they had against Hull.
"But we know having won in the last three meetings with Huddersfield then we know we can beat them."
The decision means Wigan Warriors will play Leeds Rhinos in the other semi final at the DW Stadium on Friday night, kick off 8pm.
