Tony Smith praises Ryan Atkins' return for Warrington Wolves

WOLVES boss Tony Smith was pleased with Ryan Atkins’ contribution on his return to action in France.
After two months on the sidelines with ankle trouble, playing for 80 minutes in slippery conditions at Stade Gilbert Brutus was no mean feat.
“I thought he was tremendous,” said Smith of his 27-year-old England left centre.
“He made an initial error with an early ball carry but he was very good other than that.
“Ryan was particularly strong defensively, making some good reads and he will be better for the run.”
Atkins will be hoping for improved luck compared to his last outing against his hometown club.
For it was in the 19-18 win at home to Leeds on July 5 that the lethal try scorer bust his ankle.
Overall, Smith felt his team were rewarded for their courage in the defeat of Catalan Dragons.
“I thought we were really gutsy,” said the head of coaching and rugby.
“We overcame a whole lot and it is without doubt the most intimidating place to go and play.
“You’ve just got to roll with it and see if you can come out on top in the end.”
He said it was a fantastic rehearsal for the play-offs campaign.
“Both sides were gutsy and Catalan never gave in,” said Smith.
“They probably made a few more errors than us on early tackles, which probably cost them a little more than it cost us.”
