WARRINGTON Wolves’ will meet St Helens in the Academy Under 19s Elimination play-off semi final after defeating Huddersfield Giants at Wilderspool Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Wolves repelled an excellent Giants outfit with a superb second half performance in front of a large crowd, meaning they will face their bitter rivals Saints on Saturday at Langtree Park, kick off 2.15pm, as a curtain raiser to the St Helens v Hull KR Super League play-off game.
Wolves under 19 assistant coach Peter Nicholson said: “It was a very pleasing all-round team performance, especially in the second half.
“We put ourselves under pressure at times in the first half but defensively we were excellent and really kept our structure as the Giants tested us for long periods.
“We were far more composed after the break and created lots of problems for Huddersfield.
“Declan Patton’s kicking game really came to the fore in that second period, kept the Giants on the back foot and allowed us to take advantage and score some top quality tries.
“Andy Ackers and Ryan Maneely both gave excellent displays and credit must go to our forwards, who really stood up well against a big physical Huddersfield pack “Huddersfield showed why they have been one of the form teams over the past couple of months with a very spirited performance but we proved that we are a tough nut to crack and deservedly got the win.”
Early pressure by the Giants saw them take a deserved 10th minute lead, when a couple of repeat sets on Wolves’ line reaped dividends as hooker Canaan Smithies burrowed over from dummy half.
Full back Jared Simpson converted, but 13 minutes later the Wolves hit back as a penalty on the Giants line enabled hooker Andy Ackers and scrum half Joe Philbin to combine for a try winger Scott Turner converted.
Two minutes before the break the Wolves took the lead following a lovely chip into the in-goal area by Patton and full back James Saltonstall won the race to touch down at the side of the posts. Turner converted to give his side a 12-6 half time advantage.
Giants showed their resilience by clawing back to 12-10 five minutes into the second half courtesy of Elliott Gorman, but another brilliant kick from Patton enabled Turner to re-establish the hosts’ lead with a converted try in the corner.
Wolves moved further clear on 67 minutes, when prop forward Tom Walker made a good run down the middle and a quick play-the-ball allowed Ackers to send Sam Wilde over for his first try for the club. Turner converted.
Ackers added one of his own five minutes later from a dummy half dart, Turner converting, before the rampant Wolves wrapped up the match two minutes from time as Turner latched on to Will Milner’s pass to open a 34-10 scoreline.
