Over the moon as rain fell for Warrington Wolves' match
ONE man was glad of all the rain ahead and during Wolves’ clash with Catalan Dragons in the not-so-sunny south of France.
It’s not that he took any pleasure from seeing all the fans get a drenching, he just knows that playing in blazing heat for the last time this year before the wintry play-offs start would have done his team no good.
“I was so pleased it was raining,” he said.
“It would have been a much more attractive game if it hadn’t have been, because both teams like to throw the ball around.
“But this time of the year it ain’t going to happen too often that the sunshine comes out.
“We’ve got to wind our horns in a little bit, play a bit tougher and smarter as well as kick better and a bit earlier – all the sort of things Kevin Sinfield has been doing with Leeds Rhinos for the past five years to get his team over the line.
“We’ve got to learn some of those things, so I was over the moon when I got up this morning and it was cloudy and the rain came.
“The rain meant it was a grafting game, a stick-to-your-plan sort of game.
“And our defence was absolutely enormous. It forced a lot of errors and I thought physically we were very tough.
“I like that heading into the play-offs. We need to back that up again next week.”
He had highlighted the importance of the kicking game at this time of year and added: “It was much better than some days we’ve had not so long ago, when we’ve been kicked to death.
“It’s going to get challenged next week up against the team that has just about the best kicking game in the business at this time of the year.”
