Looking back at Viking loss as pivotal
3:35pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in Wolves news
WITH Friday’s win against St Helens, Wolves made a start towards realising Tony Smith’s hopes.
He wants the team’s quest for Grand Final glory to reach a position where they can look back upon the August 15 home defeat to Widnes Vikings as a turning point.
In that 16-6 loss, Wolves fumbled their way through dire conditions to leave their supporters questioning the side’s potential for the remainder of the season.
He said: “We learn our lessons really harshly, but often they are the most important ones.
“I think we will look back at the Widnes game and say: ‘Hey, that was really good for us’.
“Even though we didn’t plan to go through it in that way, I am pretty sure we will be able to use that to motivate ourselves.”
Wolves stepped up against St Helens, dominating in the early stages and defending doggedly to run out victors on a dry night.
Past accusations of being a ‘fair-weather team’ had resurfaced after the Widnes loss and Smith accepts his men must adjust their style to suit the conditions..
“The weather can close in a fair bit and if we have a miserable day for handling then we have to wind our necks in a bit in terms of our attacking flair at this time of the year,” he said.
