WOLVES fans have started to filter into southern Spain and France in readiness for Saturday’s final league game of the season against Catalan Dragons.
At Gerona Airport, Spain, this morning, Catalan Sports Tours representative Dave Foti confirmed a late surge in interest for the game from Warrington supporters.
He said his firm would be taking nine bus-loads of fans to the game in Perpignan on Saturday, kick-off 6pm local time (5pm UK time), with many of them travelling in from Spanish resorts like Loret de Mar.
It is thought that many fans have made a late call to venture over the Channel after Wolves missed out on a Challenge Cup Final appearance at Wembley.
Those arriving today have been met with sweaty 29 degrees heat, though the temperature is set to drop and cloud cover due to rise over the next few days according to weather forecasts.
Among the fans heading out of Manchester Airport on the 0640 flight to Gerona today were a Bewsey couple celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary.
Clifford and Christine Mills make the annual trip to see Wolves play Catalan Dragons but the weekend has fallen particularly nice for them, 15 years to the day they got married.
Dedicated rugby league fan Clifford, aged 58, was sporting his Catalan Dragons shirt and Warrington Wolves cap for the flight.
“I’m one of them fans who believes there is a special relationship between the two clubs and I like coming to these games because of the fans. I love the place and I love the fans,” said Clifford, who works in Morrisons’ Supermarket distribution unit in Northwich.
Christine, employed at Daresbury Laboratory, added: “I just tow along for these trips, I don’t usually go to the games.
“It is a special day for us and I’ve already got my treat, a new charm for my bracelet.”
They will be staying in Spain for the weekend.
“We’re staying in Loret and we get the bus into Perpignan for the game as part of a package,” said Christine.
“We’ve done it this way before, in fact we’re staying in the same hotel.
“It’s a lot cheaper doing it this way and because of the number of people staying there you still get a good atmosphere.”
