IF enthusiasm is a key ingredient in the make-up of a professional rugby league player then Warrington Wolves are already on to a winner with Chris Sandow before he has taken a step in the country.

The Australian NRL scrum half, signed from Parramatta Eels until the end of 2017, found it difficult in a conversation with Wolves owner Simon Moran to put into words the height of his excitement ahead of a fresh start with The Wire.

Moran said the chase for Sandow’s signature had been ‘ongoing for a while’ until finally being put to bed 24 hours before last Friday’s 2015 transfer deadline.

He added: “We’re really optimistic about him. He’s really enthusiastic to get over as soon as he can once his visa comes through – hopefully this week.

“He’s really excited. He just can’t wait to play. He couldn’t tell me how excited he is to start his career at Warrington, meet the fans and do his very best for the team.”

Things had become messy for the 26-year-old former South Sydney Rabbitohs playmaker over the final few months of his four years with Parramatta, including a financial dispute as well as a public disagreement with coach Brad Arthur over the team’s style of play.

Moran said: “It was difficult at the end for him. He was going to leave at the end of the year anyway and it has probably worked out best for all parties.

“There’s no denying his talent and so we’ll look forward to him putting on the primrose and blue.”

Moran said he, like the majority of Wolves fans, has only seen Sandow play on TV, while many have been studying highlight reels on website YouTube.

He said: “Chris has certainly got a lot of skill in all aspects of the game, and certainly attacking wise.”

Sandow is Wolves’ third major signing for 2016, following in the footsteps of Newcastle Knights utility back Kurt Gidley and Hull FC winger Tom Lineham.

Moran, who has ruled out speculation on a move for Salford half back Rangi Chase, said at least one more signing is to be completed.

And although it is acknowledged that the shape of the squad beyond 2015 is an exciting prospect, Moran is keen for all to keep their minds on the here and now.

“I think the time now is to focus on the players we’ve got signed this year and this Saturday’s semi final.”
