WHO says Warrington can’t play wet-weather rugby league?

The answer two weeks ago would have been “most people” after an abject display in miserable rain at Huddersfield.

However, in arguably worse conditions on their home turf, they systematically dispensed with a Wigan side who are set to be one of their main title challengers.

Looking at the scoreline, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a complete, 80-minute performance but, in truth, Wigan had the better of the first 20 minutes and Josh Charnley’s slide over gave them a hard-earned lead.

Enter Daryl Clark, the man Shaun Wane will be happy to see the back of after two rip-roaring performances against his side in the space of a month.

Ferocious in defence, precocious in attack, his opening try from Matty Russell’s inventive offload was richly deserved.

Just before the half-hour, off goes captain Chris Hill and on comes Ben Westwood. Regulation interchange? Not on your life!

Two tackles later, “Super” Bennie received for the first time and bulldozed over despite the attentions of four Wigan defenders.

Wire were in control, pinning Wigan inside their 20-metre zone regularly and starving them of field position with superb line speed.

Kevin Penny’s try, as always, was a thing of beauty, soaring high to claim Kurt Gidley’s bomb.

Worryingly for Wigan, the Wire attack had not quite hit their straps at that point.

That came in the second half.

More innovative offloading saw Atkins burrow over before a huge overlap saw him grab his second 10 minutes later.

Benjamin Jullien had come on after Tom Lineham was knocked dizzy by a monster hit from Tony Clubb and his first try in primrose and blue, crashing over from Russell’s short ball, was just reward for a brilliant stint.

John Bateman was a figure of belligerence for Wigan, almost carrying the fight on his own at times, and his try after chasing down his own kick gave his side the double figures they scarcely deserved.

The last laugh though went to Westwood as he exploited more abject Warriors defending to take Wire to the 40-point mark.

Forty points? Against Wigan? What a night!
