BRIAN Carney had his first run in Warrington colours at the weekend.

The former Great Britain right winger completed 80 minutes for Warrington Wolves Reserves in their clash with Hull FC at Wilderspool Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

“He’s better for it,” said Warrington Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith.

“He’s feeling more at home and felt it was the right thing for him.”

Carney, 18th man for the Super League game against Hull 24 hours later, appears to be turning up the heat on current right winger Chris Riley for a place in the first team.

Straight after commenting on Carney, the Wolves boss said: “I thought Riley was pretty good on Sunday.

“I thought he had a really strong game for us.

“He’s had a couple of games where he’s put together some good performances, mainly defensively, but his attack was a lot better too.

“I’ll also mention Richard Mathers. I thought he was good at the back for us against Hull.

“His defence was outstanding a few times.”
