STEFAN Ratchford says The Wire are hoping for some drier weather in the coming weeks so their creative spine can show their true capabilities.

The combination between Ratchford at full-back, Kevin Brown and Tyrone Roberts in the halves and Daryl Clark at dummy-half has been developing nicely in recent games, with Wolves currently on a run of four consecutive wins.

Two of those victories – against Catalans on March 17 and Castleford on Easter Monday – were played in torrential rain but Warrington displayed admirable control and game management on both occasions.

However, England international Ratchford says fans have not yet seen what their team is truly capable of.

Ratchford was also particular in his praise of Clark, whose performance in the 18-6 win over the Tigers won him the Warrington Guardian readers’ man of the match vote.

“The partnerships down the spine probably stood out in the past couple of weeks more than it did on Monday,” Ratchford said.

“I think Daz Clark has been unbelievable.

“He’s been doing a lot of defence in the middle but he keeps going with his line breaks. He’s all over the place!

“The drier it gets, the better the team is going to be.

“We can combine a lot better once we start throwing the ball around, which is what suits us.

“If we’ve got to buckle down and do the simple things in bad conditions, though, we’ve shown we can do that too.

“These two wins over Easter will be really important for us come the end of the year.

“The Easter period, and the games before and after it, is a vital time to pick up points and climb up the table.

“We’re three games from four in that period. We were scratchy earlier on in the season, but we seem to be heading in the right direction.”

Monday’s game at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle was in major doubt, with standing water noticeable in various places on the pitch.

However, Ratchford believes their victory in Perpignan two weeks previous helped them along their way against last year’s League Leaders’ Shield winners.

“A couple of the Castleford lads sent us some videos of how bad the pitch was,” he said.

“There was always that element of doubt, but we never really spoke about it. We had the mindset of going there, doing a job and picking up two points.

“I think it helped that we played Catalans in similar conditions not too long ago.

“We played well that day and I think that dug into how we did at Cas.

“It was like a duck pond out there. The water was over your boots it was that deep!

“It is what it is, though. We get paid to play the game whatever the weather.

“You have to turn up and play the conditions and we’ve been doing that pretty well.”

The Wire now aim to extend their winning run when they visit Salford Red Devils on Saturday and Ratchford has called upon his teammates to keep building on their performances.

“Our form early on was a bit patchy. We were poor for the first couple of games, picked up two good wins then dropped off again,” he said.

“We knew this period was going to be tricky for us, but we feel we’re going the right way now.

“To win three out of three in the past few weeks is a massive step. Hopefully, we can keep building on that for the rest of the season.

“We have to go into Saturday with the right mindset and prepare ourselves as best we can for a big win.”
