A VETERAN from the halcyon days of Warrington Rugby League Club is celebrating his 90th birthday today.

Former forward Gerry Lowe, who was born and bred in the town, was a member of the 1955 Championship-winning squad.

And he featured in the 1950 and 1954 Challenge Cup Final wins.

Talking of his career previously with the Guardian, Lowe said: "It was good fortune that first got me playing for Warrington.

"A number of players went to Australia for the Great Britain tour in 1950 and in those days, they had to go before the cup final to get there in time.

"So I was called in to play in a number of games before the final - and the final itself.

"They were great days. We would go down to the final on a train - it was a huge occasion, there were so many people there."

Gerry also played as a professional for Keighley.

He joined the Wire from Warrington Rugby Union Club and made 129 appearances between 1950 and 1956, scoring 12 tries in the process.
