WOLVES’ returning trio of players are “desperate” to put on impressive displays in the final two games of the season, head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith says.

Ben Currie, Daryl Clark and Ben Pomeroy have all return to the Wire squad and will play some part on Sunday’s game at Featherstone Rovers.

Smith believes potential selection for England’s World Cup squad will be “high on the priority list” for Clark and Currie, while Pomeroy is out of contract at season’s end.

“We’ve got three people who will be desperate for big performances,” he said.

“It bodes well, it’s a good injection of talent into our team at this stage of the year.

“For both Daryl Clark and Ben Currie, it will be very high on their priority list to put themselves in contention for World Cup selection. Rightly so, as well.”

The Wire boss says centre Pomeroy will be “rusty” on his return from a fractured toe but says he is “prepared to take the risk” with the Australian.

“Ben is so desperate to play rugby league and he has a real desire to keep his career going,” Smith said.

“What people won’t know is what Ben has contributed around the place. He has been an absolute pleasure to work with.

“When you’re dealing with people like him, you know they are going to go out and give it their all. I’ve loved giving him the opportunity.

“He’s going to be rusty, there’s no doubt about that, but I’m prepared to take that risk with him because I know he is going to be whole-hearted.”
