TONY Smith says Ben Pomeroy is “devastated” to have been told he must spend around a month on the sidelines.

The Australian centre finished Thursday’s 16-10 victory at Wigan, his second game for The Wire after signing from French side Lezignan Sangliers, but was seen limping throughout the game.

It has now been revealed that the 33-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has suffered a fractured toe and faces at least four weeks out of action.

“Ben was devastated when he got the news, he’s playing for a contract,” Smith said.

“He’s doing his best for the team but he’s also doing his best for himself.

“Normally with a fractured big toe, he could possibly play on but it is close to the joint.

“If it heals well, he will be back in four weeks.”

Kurt Gidley was also injured at the DW Stadium, picking up a small fracture in his fibula that is expected to keep him out for around five weeks.

However, Ben Currie made a barnstorming return from 10 months out with a knee injury by scoring the winning try.

Smith confirmed the 23-year-old came through the game unscathed but says he still “has plenty of work to do” in order to get back up to speed.

“It’s ongoing for Ben but he’ll be in pretty good shape this week,” he said.

“He was a bit stiff and sore, both in the knee and in other parts of his body, as you would expect after such a long absence.

“He’s recovered well, he’s still got plenty of work to do in terms of maintenance of his body and his knee.”
