BEN Pomeroy hopes a partnership with fellow Wire new boy Peta Hiku can continue to flourish on the troublesome right flank.

Rhys Evans, Toby King and Harvey Livett featured before collecting long-term injuries, but the ex-Catalans Dragons centre made a good impression on his debut alongside New Zealand international Hiku – on his first home appearance – as The Wire rattled up a club record victory for a game against Leigh.

Coming together as a new combination well into a season can be tough but Australian Pomeroy, playing his first game at this level since 2015, marked the occasion with a try crafted by the Kiwi’s lovely footwork as they both swapped between the centre and wing positions throughout the 80 minutes.

“I guess it can be tough, but we’re playing the game we know,” said Pomeroy.

“You only have to talk to each other about a couple of things here and there and I felt pretty comfortable with him out there.

“I’ve been a centre for 99 per cent of my career and I’m more comfortable with defending there, so I defended in the centres and let Hiku do his magic there in attack. It worked out well.

“He can play anywhere, he’s comfortable on the wing and in the centres and he was great for me.

“I only came into the mix with the team last week so I’ve just been training centre/wing with Peta. I hope we’ll get more games together.

“I’m happy to play either side. I’m probably more suited to the right, but I’ve had probably just as much success on the left at the start of my career. It just doesn’t look as pretty, but it doesn’t matter as long as you get the job done.

“Peta’s work for the try was awesome. I’ve not played too much on the wing but as a centre I know what I want my winger to do so I just held out, let him get on the outside of his centre and hope that the winger comes in. He did, so it was Merry Christmas.

“I’ve not scored many easier tries. It was a bit bizarre, but I’ll take it.”

“I felt I was a bit quiet early on, it’s hard to get a touch on the wing. I was more involved in the second half. It’s good to get the first game in and I can build off that.”

The 33-year-old, who played more than 15 NRL games for Cronulla Sharks before joining Catalans for two seasons, joined The Wire from French competition outfit Lezignan Sangliers last month on a deal until the end of the season.

His debut had to wait for him to first shake off a knee injury.

“It was just great to be out on the big stage again,” said Pomeroy.

“There was a big crowd in attendance, there was a great atmosphere and I was very happy.

“I was very excited, I felt like I was making my career debut not just my Warrington debut. I couldn’t be happier. In terms of facilities and the way the club’s run it’s probably the best club I’ve experienced in my time.

“I’m blown away with how its run. I’m just going to do my best for the rest of the year and see if anything comes of it for next year.

“I don’t feel I’m ready to retire just yet. I’ll definitely put my hand up for anywhere next year. I’ll see if anyone needs me.

“For the moment my focus is on providing a bit of experience, give a few tips here and there and just bring an old head into the mix.

“Hopefully we can get a bit of a roll on after Leigh, keep this buzz going and continue the winning form.”
