PETA Hiku says Wolves fans may have to wait to see his best form ahead of his home debut for the club.

The New Zealand international made his Wire bow in Saturday’s 26-12 defeat at Wakefield Trinity after joining from NRL side Penrith Panthers.

He started in the centres before Will Dagger’s injury forced him to switch to full-back in the second half.

The game was played less than a week after Hiku arrived in England and he admitted his on-field relationships with his teammates need time to develop.

However, the 24-year-old said he is excited to play in front of The Halliwell Jones Stadium crowd against Leigh Centurions tonight.

“I enjoyed the game but my lungs were gone at full-time!” he said.

“My legs were tired and I started cramping up late on but that match fitness will come in the next couple of games.

“I enjoyed being out there with the boys and the Warrington fans who turned out were great.

“The rest of the season is going to be key for me personally to learn more about the boys and how they like to play.

“The more games I get to play, the more I will get to know the plays and hopefully that will make me more effective.

“Hopefully, the fans will start to see the best of me at the back end of the year.

“It’ll be good to play my first home game, I’m so excited about it.

“It’s a nice place, I’ve been down a couple of times now.

“It’s such a good stadium to have as your home, I’m just desperate to get out and play there.”

Hiku almost marked his debut in perfect style by crossing for a try in the first half, but lost his grip on the ball before grounding over the line.

Referee Robert Hicks ruled Hiku had knocked on, but the Wire man was adamant there were hands on the ball.

“When I was getting closer to the line, I was getting more excited but it all happened very fast,” he said.

“I went to put it down but Bill Tupou got his hand in round the side and whacked the ball.

“He was coming up onto it as I was going down and I couldn’t quite keep a good grip on the ball. Obviously that’s something I have to do better on.

“The boys are obviously disappointed about how we played. We’ve recapped on it and there’s a lot of things we could have done better.

“We all know what we’ve done wrong but we’ve moved on for it and we’re focused on this week now.”

Hiku is set to play in the centres again tomorrow, Friday, as The Wire welcome Leigh Centurions to The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

This will be the former Manly Sea Eagles man’s first time playing in front of a home crowd in England.

He played all three games for the touring New Zealand side against England in 2015 and admits he has been impressed with the passion of English crowds.

Hiku also says the Wolves players have been waxing lyrical to him about the support they receive from the Wire faithful.

“Hopefully we can send the fans home happy by giving them the result they want,” he said.

“Whenever I’ve watched games in England and in the few games I’ve played in over here, I’ve loved how the crowds are.

“They are so passionate about their footy and I’ve heard a lot about how loud they can be at home games.

“I’m really excited to get out on the pitch and play now.”
