WHO will play on the other wing?

That is the big question resulting from the Warrington Wolves 19-man squad selected by Tony Smith to face Wigan Warriors in the Ladbroke Challenge Cup quarter final at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday.

Tom Lineham, Wolves’ leading try scorer this season, is the only regular wing man in the chosen group and he has been settled on the left flank this year.

But on the opposite side, the spot has been held by Kevin Penny over the past two weeks and he is not in the mix this time around.

Other options Matty Russell and Rhys Evans are both injured, while Jack Johnson has not been included after his recall this week from a loan stint with Widnes Vikings.

It is not clear at this stage if Penny and Johnson are injured or overlooked.

First-year full-time squad members Ryan Jones and Taylor Prell are wingers who have not yet been called upon in the top flight and again are not listed to feature.

Ryan Atkins, who has made the left-centre berth his own since arriving from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in 2010, does have some experience of playing on the wing.

But the powerful Yorkshireman is surely expected to slot back into his usual role on the inside of Lineham.

And in any case Smith is currently short of centres, with Toby King, Harvey Livett, Matty Blythe and a further option in the shape of Ben Currie on the sidelines along with Evans.

Will Dagger, the academy full-back who made his debut in the Super League loss at Castleford Tigers on Sunday, does have some experience playing on the flank.

And therefore from the options available it does look like Smith will turn to 18-year-old Dagger for Saturday’s crunch clash with The Wire’s fiercest rivals live on BBC TV.

Smith was happy with the work Dagger did at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle, though the youngster did show understandable signs of struggling with the pace and intensity as he suffered with cramp.

"He did ok. He held his own and came up with some decent plays as well as a couple of courageous tackles as well, putting his body on the line a few times," said Wolves' head of coaching and rugby.

"He's only a slight kid and it's probably been the only thing that's held me back from playing him in a few other games this year.

"He's already a good rugby league player. Once he works on his body, he's going to be a good Super League player.

"He did well for us and I was pleased for him."

It looks set to be an important call on the right wing, with Liam Marshall (seven tries in two games against Warrington this year) or Joe Burgess (last-minute leveller at Magic Weekend draw in Newcastle) the likeliest of markers.

If Kurt Gidley (calf) and Kevin Brown (foot) are declared fully fit to play by the time kick-off arrives, Smith will have options at full-back, right centre and in the halves.

He could call on Gidley or Ratchford at the back, Ratchford, Jack Hughes, Benjamin Jullien or even Kevin Brown at right centre, while there are Dec Patton, Brown, Gidley, Ratchford and Morgan Smith to select from at six and seven.
