WARRINGTON Wolves had begun to have 'concerns over the character' of Ben Barba as the controversial Australian signed for Saints on Wednesday.

A source close to the club said Wolves had placed a substantially bigger offer on the table for the former Cronulla back this week.

But Saints confirmed on Wednesday he had signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the Totally Wicked Stadium rather than join the Wire.

The source said: "Warrington showed him their superior training facilities, better performance culture compared to St Helens and better recent performance on the pitch.

"But three things went against the deal happening.

"Firstly the new St Helens coach (Justin Holbrook) had coached him before.

"Secondly, they shared the same agent.

"Thirdly, Warrington had begun to have some concerns about Mr Barba's character."

Barba tested positive for cocaine and was suspended shortly after helping Cronulla Sharks win the NRL title in Australia last year and has a 12-game ban hanging over him Down Under.

Saints are currently seeking advice on whether that ban stands in Super League.

The 27-year-old became available after he left French rugby union side Toulon.
