WOLVES boss Tony Smith questioned some of referee Ben Thaler’s decisions during the 24-24 Magic Weekend draw with Wigan.

With The Wire leading 24-20 in the last minute, a harsh-looking knock-on was given against Kevin Brown and the resulting Wigan set ended with Joe Burgess scoring a try to snatch a point.

Smith believes that was not the only call that went against his side, but accepts the controversies went both ways.

He also says his side needed to execute better in order to close the game out.

“It went backwards from Kevin. It was a knock-on by Liam Farrell first,” he said.

“Sean O'Loughlin dropped the ball for one of the Wigan tries in the first half as well and it wasn't detected.

“Refereeing is a tough gig so I can understand why there aren't many coming through.

“There are big calls they are getting wrong. We need to come up with solutions to make it easier for them.

“We didn't execute well enough today. Neither side was at their best.

“It could have been a whole lot worse but a whole lot better as well.”

Liam Marshall’s hat-trick made it seven tries for him in two games against Warrington and gave Wigan an 18-6 lead, with Daryl Clark crossing in the first half for Wire.

However, Stefan Ratchford and Tom Lineham narrowed the gap before Jack Hughes’ 75th-minute effort looked to have won the game for Wolves.

Ratchford hit the post with a simple-looking conversion from his own try, but Smith thought the game would turn his side’s way at that point.

The Wire boss admitted to being disappointed at not winning the game having fought back so well.

“We're disappointed and I'm sure Wigan are too,” he said.

"When you work your way into a winning situation and don't win, it's disappointing.

"We got into a situation where we should have won that game had we have managed it better.

"I'm not questioning character. That was shown in abundance by both teams.

"Some smarts let us down I think.

"I said when Stef hit the post with that kick that I thought we'd go on and win. I was nearly right!"
