Ardent Wire fan Rob Watson gives his view on Saturday's dramatic win over Wakefield.

Although Easter is over this can so often be the game that catches some teams out. Coming after a weekend of two matches, results and performances can be unpredictable.

It was Wakefield that got off to the fast start that both teams would have wanted to help mask any feelings of fatigue.

Two tries within a couple of minutes of each other gave them a twelve-point lead before the half way mark in the first half. The only good thing about this was that it appeared to be the spark for the most creative, flamboyant and exciting Wire performance of the season so far.

Whether it was something of a pre-game plan or more of a reaction to going behind, I for one was glad to see the ball being passed around more and a few offloads that those around the ball were expecting.

Of course, it wasn’t perfect and the ball did go to ground a few times, but it also created one of the best tries of the season so far as quick, long, accurate passes from Patton and Ratchford inside their own half gave Atkins some space to race into.

The hard-running centre never really looked like passing the ball himself but on this occasion that wasn’t a problem as he dismissed the full back with an emphatic hand off that reminded me of the one that Hulk gives to Thor in the film ‘Avengers Assemble.’ That long-range try gave The Wire a foothold in the match, but they still trailed 14-6 at half time and went further behind in the second half to leave themselves 20-6 behind a more than decent Wakefield team.

By this stage, Wire had produced many mistakes but they hadn’t really come from being more expansive with the ball, the vast majority of them were handling errors at the play the ball.

Whether they came from a strong desire to play the ball quickly or not they really are some of the more unforgivable type of handling errors.

Fourteen points behind with around 20 minutes to go in the match of the season when tiredness is most likely to be felt, Wire had all the excuses there to write of this match and start thinking about the trip to Hull on Friday.

Instead, they showed why I haven’t written a letter to them questioning their commitment and sense of duty. They continued to scrap away, desperate to get something from the game.

First, Chris Hill produced a classic captain’s try when it was most needed, side stepping then barging his way over with what looked like half the Wakefield team holding on to him.

That was enough to increase the belief in Wire players and just as importantly the doubt in the Wakefield players.

Tiredness seemed to be forgotten as Wire found some speed in their attack and desperation in their defence.

With the ball being flung out to the right as Wire attacked the line of an increasingly panicked Wakefield, Brown found himself with a little bit of space and only one defender in attendance, he dummied and slithered his way over the line and all of a sudden Wire were within two points with about ten minutes to go and the match was anybody’s for the taking.

More mistakes came from both teams as nerves were added to tiredness. With two minutes to go Wire were attacking around twenty metres out, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation of one magic moment.

Joyously, that moment came as the ball was moving to the left. From the south stand we could see an overlap, Ratchford could see it too and he fired out a long pass to Lineham who had to slow down a little to catch it but he had nobody directly in front of him so he set off on a sprint for the line, diving the last few metres to avoid being bundled into touch by the last ditch covering defence.

We celebrated the try as you would expect for such a late winner, then noticed that the referee was going to add to the drama by asking his colleague in the booth to confirm the try. That just meant we got to celebrate twice.

More risks being taken and such a late winning try meant that this was by far my favourite match of the season so far. They are still so far away from being as good as they could be, but as long as they continue not to give up on each other, I won’t give up on them.

Right now, they look like a bobsleigh team that have crashed half way down. They are in a bit of a mess and look horrendous, but you know they are going to keep going to the end.
