Askam 30 Crosfields 33

CROSFIELDS boss Mark Brennan hailed the character in his team after they overturned a half-time deficit to win for the second week in a row.

They trailed Askam 26-12 at the break, but skipper Jack Reid inspired his side to victory with a 20-point personal haul that encompassed two tries and six goals.

Nathan Taylor, twice, and John Whittaker also crossed for Soap, with Ash Cornelia adding a late drop goal.

“Cumbria is a tough place to go and come away with the result so credit to the boys for digging in,” Brennan said.

“When we have our tails up, we are tough for anyone to handle.

“Coming away with a 30-33 victory after being down and out at half time shows the character in the team.

“We have another week off now so we will look to fix up a few little things. We have leaked over 50 points in our last 2 games so we need to look at that.”

After Askam roared out of the traps to race into a 20-0 lead, Taylor sprinted home from 70 metres to get Soap on the board.

The hosts stretched their lead after Matty Barber had been sin-binned, but Taylor’s touching-down of Reid’s chip to the corner proved pivotal in changing the momentum.

After the break, Reid’s clever kick was collected between the posts by Whittaker to narrow the gap to eight points.

The Soap skipper went from provider to scorer on two occasions within five minutes to take his side ahead before adding a penalty to stretch the lead to six points.

Cornelia’s drop goal gave Soap a two-score lead, making Askam’s late try immaterial.

Crosfields’ next game comes on Saturday, May 6, when they welcome Wigan St Judes to Hood Lane.
