Warrington Wolves Res 26 St Helens Res 34

WOLVES’ reserve side could not maintain a blistering start as they fell to their third defeat in a row in an entertaining clash with St Helens.

Three tries in the first 20 minutes of the game put them 16-0 up, but Saints rebounded to win the game and head coach Lee Briers says more composure would have seen them win.

“That was an improvement on our previous two games even though we didn’t manage to get the win,” he said.

“I was really proud of the effort the lads put into the game and with a little more composure the result could have been different.

“We showed a lot of spirit to keep going till the end and hopefully we can take that into future games.”

Union convert Taylor Prell squeezed over in the corner just two minutes into his second outing for the side before Pat Moran brushed off three defenders to score next to the posts.

Brad Stanway stepped round the defence to ensure Wolves’ start got even better, but that was when Saints’ comeback began.

David Ecclestone and Calvin Wellington both crossed for converted tries to narrow Wolves’ half-time lead to four points.

George Milton scored between the posts to give Saints the lead for the first time before Danny Richardson finished off Eccleston’s break to give them breathing space.

Jonah Cunningham put the visitors in total control with another try, but Wolves roared back late on to make the game interesting.

Good work from Sam Wilde kept the ball alive for Lewis Hatton to score wide on the left and the scorer turned provider when his break was finished off by Declan Kay.

Despite spending the final 10 minutes camped in the Saints half, Wolves could not find another score.

They travel to Halifax for their next game on Saturday, May 6, kick off 2pm.
