TONY Smith says Wolves need to look at how St Helens have turned their form around and take inspiration from it.

Saints’ 31-6 victory on Friday night handed The Wire their sixth consecutive defeat to leave them rooted to the bottom of Super League.

By contrast, Keiron Cunningham’s side have made it back-to-back wins and Smith is confident things will turn for them like it has for their neighbours.

“Before Saints played Hull, there wouldn’t have been much between our performance levels and where Saints were,” he said.

“They played well at Hull, they played well at Catalans and won and they played solid tonight. That’s what we’ve got to do.

“We’ve got to find the game that unlocks us, we were all hoping it was tonight. We gave ourselves a chance to do that in terms of defence but our kicking game wasn’t good enough in that first half.

“They are probably getting frustrated with themselves and each other a little bit with some of those errors.

“That drops your confidence again but we’ve got to keep working through it and it will come for us like it’s come for Saints.”

Wolves have now officially made their worst ever start to a league season as the leading clubs get further away with each defeat.

However, Smith says there is “no point” in looking at the table just yet but says his side need to go “back to basics.”

“A lot of coaches will tell you there isn’t much difference between coming up with points, wins and confidence and not doing,” he said.

“It seems like it’s a long way off at times when we look at the table but we can’t do that.

“There is no point in us looking at the table, we’ve got to get back to basics and make sure that we’re in there competing.

“We made some real defensive inroads tonight compared to what we’ve been churning out in recent weeks, we made it hard work for them.”
